About the Honoree
Al-Haj Rashid Ahmad American (1923–2015)
Al-Haj Rashid Ahmad American (1923–2015) was a trailblazing pioneer, devoted missionary, and an enduring symbol of faith, resilience, and service in the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA. Born Rudolph Thomas in East St. Louis, Illinois, he navigated an era marked by racial inequality and urban hardship in search of divine truth. In 1946, while living in Chicago, he encountered the teachings of Islam Ahmadiyya at the historic Al-Sadiq Mosque and formally accepted the faith in 1947. Transformed by his newfound spiritual purpose, he dedicated his life to the service of Allah (Waqf) and made history in 1949 as the first American-born Muslim to travel to Rabwah, Pakistan, to study at the sacred institution of Jamia Ahmadiyya.
During five years of intense study in Pakistan (1949–1954), Imam Rashid Ahmad mastered Quranic exegesis, Hadith, Arabic, Urdu, and comparative religion under challenging conditions. Upon returning to the United States in 1955 as Imam Rashid Ahmad American, he embarked on six decades of selfless missionary work across the Midwest and nation. His extraordinary leadership and dedication culminated in his appointment as National Amir (President) of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA during the 1970’s, during which he guided the national Jama'at through key organizational milestones and spiritual expansion. Renowned for his humility, perseverance, and steadfast commitment to prayer, he traveled endlessly, mentored youth, and served as a pillar of moral strength for generations of American Ahmadi Muslims until his passing on February 7, 2015.
Established by Majlis Ansarullah USA, the Al-Haj Rashid Ahmad American Scholarship honors his monumental legacy of spiritual devotion, educational sacrifice, and lifelong service to humanity and the Khalifat. It aims to support and inspire young scholars to embody his hallmark qualities of perseverance, academic discipline, and unyielding faith as they strive to make meaningful contributions to their communities and society at large.
